This course introduces students to communications technology from a media perspective. Students will explore the areas of video and audio production, print and graphic communications, interactive media and animation. Student projects may include filming and editing videos, working with audio, using lighting and green screens, and developing GIF and stop-motion animations. Students have the option to specialize in the areas they most enjoy by taking Comm Tech focus courses in Grades 11 and 12.

Grade 11


TGJ3M (Graphic Design and Animation Emphasis)
College/University Preparation
Prerequisite: None (TGJ2O recommended)

This course examines communications systems and design production processes in the areas of Graphic Design and Animation. Projects may include the creation of computer-generated bitmap and vector graphics, layout and print design, interactive design, and stop-motion, GIF, and/or 2-D animation. Students will develop planning, hands-on, and problem solving skills using industry-standard software, camera equipment, and lighting. Students will gain an understanding of the elements and principles of design, industry standards and regulations, health and safety issues, careers, and issues related to communications technology, society and the environment.

TGV3M (Video and Audio Production Emphasis)
College/University Preparation
Prerequisite: None (TGJ2O recommended)

This course examines communications systems and design production processes in the areas of Video and Audio Production. Projects may include the creation of public service announcements, montages, commercials, instructional and storytelling videos. Students will develop planning, hands-on, and problem solving skills using industry-standard software, camera equipment, and lighting. Students will gain an understanding of pre- and post-production techniques, industry standards and regulations, health and safety issues, careers, and issues related to communications technology, society and the environment.

Grade 12

TGJ4M (Graphic Design and Animation Emphasis)
College/University Preparation
Prerequisite: TGJ3M

This course expands upon the topics covered in TGJ3M. Students will have the opportunity to explore, in greater depth, the specific areas of Graphic Design and/or Animation that they are most interested in. Student-directed projects allow for further development of project management skills, time management skills, teamwork skills, and independent skills and work habits. 

TGV4M (Video and Audio Production Emphasis)
College/University Preparation
Prerequisite: TGV3M

This course expands upon the topics covered in TGV3M. Students will have the opportunity to explore, in greater depth, the specific areas of Video and Audio Production that they are most interested in. Student-directed projects allow for further development of project management skills, time management skills, teamwork skills, and independent skills and work habits.
